The final of the Group 1 Club Championship competition was played at the barracks squash courts on Saturday 8th January 2014.
It was between Phil Fray and Dan Cavalli. Dan, as losing semi-finalist, had been asked to step in when Dinesh Bansal had declared himself unfit to play due to an injury which is likely to keep him off a squash court for two or three months.
In the first game Dan was unable to find his rhythm and Phil ran out 9 – 3 winner.
In the second Dan quickly established a 4 points to love lead before Phil registered his first point. After some excellent squash with the serve changing hands several times Phil pulled the game back to 5 – 4. The game was then stuck on this score with some very long rallies being played and a number of change of serves until Dan pulled the score back to 5 – 5. Dan seemed tired at this point which allowed Phil, losing only one more point, to quickly run out 9 – 6 winner.
The third game was a very even affair up until 4 – 4 following which Dan pulled his game together and moved into an 8 – 4 lead. Phil managed to win one more point but Dan retrieved the serve and ran out 9 – 5 winner.
The fourth was again a fairly even affair with the game, up until 3 – 3, punctuated by some great squash and again long rallies. Following this point in the game Dan managed to retrieve the serve three times but was unable to capitalise and win any further points letting Phil run out 9 – 3 winner to claim the match.
Another excellent final was witnessed by those that came along and thanks go to all that attended.
Thanks also to Dinesh Bansal who marked the match. If anyone wants to go on the next refereeing and marking course with him please let us know!
Thanks also to Jim Leconte for once again organising and presenting the trophies.
Jim will be drawing up all of the competitions again soon so keep an eye on the web site and the board at the Medway Park.
